WED 2010

World Environment Day is approaching. Do your bit, alone we can make a difference, together we can save the world. If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem! Forget elections, politicians and expecting others to solve the big problems. Just do it.

  2. I am what I am.
Nearly twenty years ago i became aware of a growing need to preserve what we have. I went on to study plants and the environment at degree level. Having a much better understanding of this stuff means that over the last 20 yrs I have spoken to, and influenced many people, even if it's in the pub over a few beers.
At the age of 17 I planted thousands of trees up in the Highlands of Scotland, the Sitka spruce that have been acting as CO2 sinks for the last 20 odd years will be harvest in another 7 years, the scots pine 10 years later and the Oaks will outlive me by a very long time as they will be managed as a coppice woodland. I have helped to maintain footpaths and fencing to protect special areas of the UK, i have been into schools to help children create nature reserves or flower gardens, these kids will now be teenagers or in their 20s and will haopefully be influencing others about the right way to live.
As a botanist I've helped with species surveys so that we actually know what is there in the first place, one of the great problems with biodiversity is that it can't be measured if you don't know what's there! is it increasing / decreasing? we don't know!
I was the first person at the BC Colombo to buy and electric bike, I convinced Tom / Shannon to buy theirs too, mine is still in service cos I gave it away free to another teacher who is still using it.
I've been recycling my trash since 1991, I don't have to do anything on the day, I've been doing it for most of my adult life and have done more than most will ever do; for the same reason I don't buys chocolates and flowers on Valentines day.
What are you going to do?
